2484 Rhododendron, Hundred Oaks June 25, 2007

2484 Rhododendron a, originally uploaded by RedStickModern.

Last week, Professor Fury gave me a tip on a great modern house off of Eugene near the interstate. I’m not sure if this is the one he had in mind, but this one just about blew my socks off. This is the first barrel-vaulted roofline I’ve seen in Baton Rouge and it’s stunning. What makes it so striking is the line of clerestory windows between the roofline and the exterior walls–the roof appears to be floating. There’s also a nice little International-style side building on the lot as well. This one is well-worth taking a drive by, as photographs do not do it justice at all.

*UPDATE* It looks like this house might still be for sale, though there wasn’t a sign in the yard.  Take a look here for interiors as well as more exteriors.

Someone must have bought the house on Rhododendron. It was on the market for a while.

  2. Hi Joe! It may still be on the market. It’s listed on xtremefsbo.com. $270,000 is the asking price, which isn’t that bad considering the square footage.

  3. Yeah, this is the one I had in mind! We went to an open house there a few months back — it was amazing.

I love the glass windows looking out onto the private courtyards. It brings the gardens into the home and treats them as additional rooms. That is something you’d see in the desert-style mid-century architecture. It’s great to see it down south!

I believe that this is an early Sam Short, Architect,
house – for his son, who is an artist -?

Mr Heck used to include several Baton Rouge works in his architectural history class including this one – i belonged to an LSU faculty member in the 70’s – an artist. Is Ed Glenny still around ? – He would know -

    It is a beauty -

I talked with the (former) owner of this house last night — fascinating woman! Unfortunately, it has been sold. She seemed to know about the provenance of the home too. She also knows the architect (and owners?) of the Blouin home (did I spell that right?) and may have him build a home for her. She actually went to the 605 Nelson house for me and checked it out and called me from the driveway (!)(I’m in Knoxville and had only seen it online) and it turns out she knew the owners of it too and had some great ideas for it.

  7. Fanstastic! Best of luck with finding a home you love…

We were told this home was the first home designed by Sam Short after he graduated. We were also told it was featured in Architectural Digest as a winning home for a small lot.
