Very cool site. Have you seen the house on Ebony Ave? It’s over by the lakes. Also, there’s another off of Country club Dr (on the left if you’re coming from Claycut) that is really impressive.
What about the Florida Blvd “corridor”? These are commercial examples but there are several very worthy “Baton Rouge Modern” buildings that have been terribly negelected or even “renovated” – If I may, I will try to send some photos for review -
Great site. I stumbled onto this site while searching for info on MCM homes in Baton Rouge, as I may be relocating to BR and, if so, would want to acquire a MCM home. Pleasantly surprised with what I have seen. Can anybody help with general info re BR neighborhoods with most MCM homes and worthy of drive-thru on my upcoming trip to BR? Also, anyone know of BR area RE agents who understand and/or specialize in MCM properties? Thanks in advance for all responses. Keep up the good work with this site.
Hi Mike! Thanks for the compliment. There are a few neighborhoods that were built in the 50s and 60s that have higher concentrations of this sort of home, but not really the higher-style examples that I’ve been attempting to showcase. Broadmoor and Sherwood Forest are two that come immediately to mind, though finding some homes that are in fairly original condition might be a challenge.
Good luck with finding a real estate agent who specializes in MCM. I haven’t met one yet. Unfortunately, Baton Rouge stood in line twice when they were passing out McMansion building permits, so we have more than our fair share. I don’t know what your budget is, but obviously the more you have to spend the better your selection will be. There’s a pretty interesting one on Nelson Drive (605 maybe?) that’s in the $300k range. It looks interesting. I’m sure you can find out more about it on an MLS site.
Thanks for your kind responses to my inquiry. Based on what I have seen on lottaliving.com and other MCM sites, I knew BR was not a hotbed for MCM properties but I am glad to see that there are a few that haven’t been razed for the ugly McMansions. If I relocate, I would be coming from a more expensive area (South Florida), so my budget should work for the BR market. I will drive thru some of the noted neighborhoods during my upcoming visit to BR.
Is it safe to say that, like so many other areas of the country other than So. Cal., Pacific NW, etc., MCM architecture is not really appreciated or understood in BR so that while MCM finds are rare, there is not much demand for them, resulting in favorable prices?
If you haven’t already you should check out the house at the corner of Glasgow and Whiehaven, one of the best in BR. Also down the street on Whitehaven is a nice renovation of a ranch by the owner of Tsunami. While in the area the neighborhood of Meadow Lea has some nice MCM.
Wanted to cordially invite all to the Preservation Salon with Darius on Thursday, November 8 at the Old Governor’s Mansion beginning at 6:00 p.m. And yes refreshments, including wine.

MCM enthusiasts of Broadmoor please unite! We’re trying our best to save our neighborhood but we can’t do this without you. Please contact us at http://www.broadmoor-br.org or send Kerry or I an email at jbeary@cox.net.
Our home is at the corner of N. Parkview & Frances Harriet.
MacKie and Kamrath out of Houston were the architects for the Pecan Grove Court property. While I’m not sure who the current owner is, the house was designed for John Gonce. Hope that helps, Todd!
I’ve been collecting photos of the various designs of Stone Block. If there’s any unusual ones in BR, I’d love it if you’d post or send an picture. I’ve blogged about them many times, for example http://veryvintagevegas.com/?s=decorative+block
hello, from your friendly neighbor to the north! i live in Shreveport and recently discovered your website and thoroughly enjoy it! ya’ll have quiet an impressive amount of mid century and modern homes in BR…but, so do we. i was wondering if there is any way to push this site a bit further beyond the city limits of BR and showcase other homes in other cities…it would be my pleasure to take the pictures of the homes and even contact the current owners…just curious!
Hi Myron! Thanks for the compliments. Feel free to send any pictures you’d like with some relevent information, and we may have an “Our Neighbors to the North/South/etc” entry on occasion.
Hey, kudos to you for the inset article in the recent issue of 225! I really appreciate your efforts to promote and preserve MCM and fab mod architecture in Baton Rouge.
Does anybody know where around Baton Rouge or surrounding areas you can buy modern furniture for these amazing houses? I’m having a LOT of trouble finding anything around here.
We own a mid-century modern in Pollard–not looking to sell but are pleased to know of the interest in this style. From time to time, MCMs do come up for sale in this neighborhood. I enjoy your website–glad you did it.
Our house (built in 1970 by Jim Smith) has 15 ft triple sliding glass doors. No one in town seems to know who can repair/replace — gaskets, etc. Does anyone have any comments? We’d like to have all of the sliders in the house (and there are several sets, either replaced or cleaned up.
Thank you!
Candace
hello all… i have gathered about 20+ pics (tons more i have gotten around to) of some very cool mid century homes in shreveport and was wondering if anyone there or your readers would like to see them…just let me know…thanks
hey scott, sorry about the response time, i havent checked this site in quite a while…i have them listed on snapfish.com (online album)…send me your email to myrongriffing@yahoo.com and i will send you a link to them…it is just a schmeckling of what we have here, about 20 or so pics…my camera died on me…and i havent ventured back out
Just found your site and find it very interesting. I grew up on West Fairway in Baton Rouge and have seen many of the homes you have pictured in the area. The one you have shown on West Fairway belongs to my mother’s neighbors. Most of the houses built in the 50’s in this neighborhood, Country Club Estates, were by Denzel Brown. He built my mother’s. When we moved in, there were sliding & folding shogi screens throughout the house. you didn’t need dressers because all the rooms had built in drawers and closets. The coolest part of another neighbours house was all the rooms on the inside had glass from the ceiling to about 2 feet below. If you stood on a ladder you could see from the living room through two bedrooms and out the back yard. I will be checking out your site more often. I am also into collecting mid-century glass and pottery and hope to soon change my home in Houston to this style.
I am living in shreveport, la. my husband and i live in a mcm/international style home (built 1938), in the south highland areas. wondering if you’d be featuring any homes from up this way. unfortunately, we are having to sell and move to new orleans (looking for a mcm there). we were told our home is a sam weiner home, but can’t find any records to verify this. are there any sites you can suggest that may point us in the right direction to find the architect of our home?
love your website…am looking to buy one of your amazing houses for my son going to law school…something close to lsu area…
could not believe the quality and beauty of your homes and website…where r they??? am tired of all the homes shown by real estate agents
I love your site. I am trying to start up a new blog that is a collection of RSS Feeds from authors around Baton Rouge and I was hoping I could include your site. It is brand new so there are only two feeds right now, but you can check it out here:
We may be relocating to BR, and we’re coming down next week for a tour, etc. Do you know of any current homes for sale that fall into the MCM style? I think the June Street home is sold/gone. I’d love some help!
Hi Megan,
There are a few properties that you may be interested in checking out, though I am not sure of your budget:
7655 Boyce Drive – $2.5 million
7724 Dove Haven – $845k
2510 Fairway Drive – $499k
10165 S. Riveroaks – $169,900
Thanks a bunch! This is great. The top 2 are out of our range for sure, but I’m going to check out the other two. We live in West Lafayette, Indiana (we have a Frank Lloyd Wright) where there happen to be many MCM homes. In fact, the historical society of Indiana had a tour of 5 MCM in West Lafayette a few months back. There were over 500 tickets sold before the event. Super cool and inspiring! Thanks again.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me be your Shreveport connection to all things MCM here! We have tons of amazing examples including the ONLY Richard Neutra in the entire state. I just took a private tour the other day and it is pretty fantastic! Also, tons of the Weiner Bros Intl Style…Bauhaus, the whole gammet…how bout a shreveport link…cmon, throw us a bone!
Very cool site. Have you seen the house on Ebony Ave? It’s over by the lakes. Also, there’s another off of Country club Dr (on the left if you’re coming from Claycut) that is really impressive.
Keep up the updates, this is totally cool!
That house by the lakes is phenomenal! It has the most personality of any of the homes around the lake, in my opinion.
What about the Florida Blvd “corridor”? These are commercial examples but there are several very worthy “Baton Rouge Modern” buildings that have been terribly negelected or even “renovated” – If I may, I will try to send some photos for review -
LOVE this site!! Wanted to share these with you…
9044 S. Parkview Dr
458 N. Parkview Dr

All are in Broadmoor Sub.
Thanks Jean! I’ll check them out.

Whitehaven dead ends on Knollwood Dr. There is a collection of several mid-century modern homes on Knollwood. You might want to check them out.

Red Stick,
Do you know who the architect is for the house at 11900 Pecan Grove? Also, do you happen to know the owners? Thanks.

sounds good, relative being: year built, architect, sq footage etc? btw, is this a for profit website or simply informational?
RSM is non-profit, all the way. It’s just a great place to check out interesting MCM and Contemporary architecture in Baton Rouge.

Hi S!
I’d be pleased if you’d give us the scoop when any of these houses come up for sale, or if you have any addresses of properties that we could feature!

Hey! Does anybody know a good site for Mid-Century Modern houses in New Orleans???
We’re working on a movie down there, and we need a gorgeous MCM house to shoot at!
A FANTASTIC site. Keep it up!!

Hi Emily,
Please email some high-quality photographs to the email address listed above, along with a property description. I’ll be happy to add it to the site.
